Artificial Intelligence (AI) plays a significant role in helping individuals achieve a better work-life balance by providing tools and solutions that streamline tasks, enhance productivity, and offer personalized assistance. It has the potential to revolutionize how we manage our work-life balance by offering a range of tools and solutions that can greatly improve productivity and provide personalized assistance.



In my personal experience while working remotely, AI helped in numerous ways to simplify hectic workdays and make life easier in busy working lifestyles in the "Travel Retail" industry involves various Retail shops in different locations such as airports, Inflight businesses,  Terminals Retail shops, and border crossings, where I got more support with AI tools. Industry more often requires interaction with a diverse range of clients and also multicultural working environments with different cultural backgrounds. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has greatly enhanced and supported various aspects of work-life balance, making tasks more efficient, personalized,
 and effective. 

A prevalent trend in many social and economic domains is the widespread utilization of AI to encourage a more harmonious union of work and personal life. Organizations, workers, and students are all utilizing AI to streamline their tasks and lead more harmonious lives. This innovative approach promotes a balance between work and life while boosting productivity, and it was largely adopted during the pandemic period, giving employees the opportunity to learn more about these AI technologies and continue to use these easy tools to balance 
work and life. 


1.) How Artificial Intelligence (AI) can support Work-Life Balance? 


Let's explore how AI is supporting employees and organizations to achieve work-life balance; 
  • Organizations: Forward-thinking organizations are increasingly recognizing the potential of AI to optimize their operations while prioritizing the well-being of their employees. AI powered tools and systems are being deployed to automate repetitive tasks, facilitate decision-making processes, and enhance communication within the workplace. By reducing the administrative burden on employees, organizations create an environment where individuals can allocate more time and energy to creative and strategic endeavors. This approach results in improved job satisfaction and a healthier work-life balance for employees, ultimately leading to higher retention rates and increased overall productivity.
  • EmployeesAI driven solutions are proving to be indispensable allies for employees seeking to strike a balance between their professional and personal commitments. Task automation, smart scheduling, and personalized reminders help individuals manage their workloads more efficiently. For instance, virtual assistants can handle routine email responses, calendar management, and data entry, enabling employees to focus on tasks that require their unique skills and expertise. Furthermore, AI-powered time management tools allow employees to allocate time for personal activities, fostering a sense of control over their daily routines and reducing stress.

While there isn't a specific HRM theory or concept exclusively focused on the use of Artificial Intelligence for work-life balance, several HRM principles and theories can be applied to effectively integrate AI technologies into HR practices aimed at improving work-life balance. A few of the HRM theories and concepts that can be relevant in the context of AI for work-life balance is The Resource-Based View, which focuses on allocating resources, Streamlining administrative tasks, and providing personalized support. Employee-centric approaches like Positive Organizational Behavior and total Rewards optimize AI implementation, Data-driven decision-making, Adaptive learning, Change management, Ethical considerations, and Continuous Improvement from Total Quality Management help HR professionals navigate organizational and cultural shifts. 

Let's Explore "Organizational Support Theory": 

Organizational Support Theory, often referred to as the "Organizational Support Theory of Work-Life Balance," emphasizes the importance of an organization's support and policies in facilitating employees' ability to balance their work and personal lives effectively. When applied to the integration of Artificial Intelligence for efficiency and work-life balance, Organizational Support Theory plays a significant role in creating a supportive environment. Here's how it applies:

Flexible Work Arrangements: Organizational Support Theory suggests that organizations should provide flexible work arrangements that allow employees to adapt their work schedules to better accommodate personal responsibilities. AI can play a role in facilitating and optimizing these arrangements. For example, AI-powered scheduling tools can help employees and managers coordinate flexible hours, remote work, or compressed workweeks while ensuring operational efficiency.

AI-Powered Assistance: Organizations can use AI-driven virtual assistants or chatbots to provide employees with real-time information and support. These AI tools can help employees manage tasks more efficiently, reducing their workloads and allowing for more time to focus on personal matters, thereby supporting work-life balance.

Benefits Customization: AI can analyze employee data and preferences to offer personalized benefits packages. Organizational Support Theory suggests that benefits should align with individual needs. For instance, AI can recommend and help employees choose benefits that support their work-life balance, such as childcare assistance, flexible spending accounts, or wellness programs.

Wellness Programs: AI can enhance wellness programs by tailoring them to individual employee needs. Organizational Support Theory highlights the importance of promoting employee well-being. AI can analyze health data, offer personalized fitness and nutrition plans, and schedule wellness activities to help employees maintain a healthier work-life balance.

Time Management Assistance: AI-driven time management tools can help employees better organize their tasks, set priorities, and reduce time spent on low-value activities. This can lead to increased efficiency at work, allowing employees to complete tasks more quickly and free up time for personal life.

Workload Monitoring: AI can analyze employee workloads and stress levels by monitoring key indicators like project deadlines and work hours. When stress levels rise or workloads become overwhelming, AI can alert HR or management to intervene and provide support, reducing the risk of burnout.

Feedback and Communication: Organizational Support Theory emphasizes the importance of communication and feedback between employees and their organizations. AI can facilitate communication through chatbots or virtual assistants, providing employees with channels to voice concerns, seek information, and receive support related to work-life balance issues.

Policy Alignment: AI can help organizations analyze the impact of their policies and practices on work-life balance. By collecting and analyzing data, AI can identify areas where policies may need adjustment to better support employees' work-life balance needs.

Data-Driven Decision-Making: AI-driven analytics can provide organizations with valuable insights into the effectiveness of work-life balance initiatives. Organizations can use these insights to make informed decisions about resource allocation and improvements in supporting employees' work-life balance.

Furthermore, Organizational Support Theory can guide organizations in using AI technologies to create a supportive work environment that fosters efficiency and work-life balance. By leveraging AI tools strategically, organizations can enhance their support for employees in managing their work and personal lives effectively, leading to improved well-being and job satisfaction.

In the literature review,  business process reengineering, which minimizes or optimizes work processes, transitioned from the industrial to the digital era with the aid of e-business environments. On the other hand, as information grew exponentially each day, corporate environments began to analyze big data and utilize CRM systems at the same time. Although the digital age and other sciences like mechatronics, nanotechnology, genetics, and so forth represent a step toward "Space Economics," other advancements will directly or indirectly affect business and economics more than other advancements. Artificial intelligence and robotics are the names of these developments. The industrial revolution and automation, particularly in the UK and by vehicle manufacturers, are credited with ushering in the "Industrial Age" (McKenzie, 2015).


2.) Most useful Artificial Intelligence (AI) Tools in the Travel Retail Industry; 

Here are some AI tools and Apps that support Work-Life Balance for the Travel Retail Industry and I'm sharing this with my personal experience;  

  • Language Translation and Communication: AI-powered language translation tools can help bridge language barriers, allowing us to communicate effectively with clients and colleagues who speak different languages. These tools can instantly translate spoken or written content, facilitating smooth interactions. 
  • Marketing and Promotion: Analyze customer data to identify potential target segments and create tailored marketing campaigns. It can also optimize the timing and content of promotions to maximize their effectiveness. 

  • Email Management: Prioritize and categorize emails, sort out spam, and even draft responses, saving valuable time and preventing email overload. 

  • Travel Planning and Booking Assistance: Travel platforms can assist travelers in planning their trips, suggesting itineraries, finding flights and accommodations, and offering recommendations based on individual preferences.
  • Workflow Automation: Streamline administrative tasks, such as scheduling meetings, organizing travel arrangements, and managing expenses. This allows to focus more on building relationships with clients and colleagues.
  • Task Automation: Automate repetitive and time-consuming tasks, freeing up more time for meaningful and creative activities. This reduces the workload and allows individuals to focus on tasks that require human judgment and decision-making. 
  • Scheduling Assistance: Scheduling tools can optimize calendars based on priorities, deadlines, and personal preferences. They can help individuals allocate time for work, family, personal pursuits, and relaxation, reducing scheduling conflicts.
  • Security and Fraud Detection: Security systems can enhance safety at any location by identifying unusual or suspicious behavior. This is particularly important in preventing theft and ensuring the safety of both customers and employees.
  • Customer Engagement and Personalization: Chatbots and virtual assistants can provide 24/7 customer support, answer queries, and assist with our requirements. AI tools can analyze historical data based on our requirements. ( Ex; Find the Customer's insights; customer behavior, preferences, and buying patternsThis information can guide decision-making and help develop effective strategies.
  • Predictive Analytics and Demand Forecasting: Analyze historical data, market trends, and seasonal patterns to predict  ( Ex; customer preferences and demand). This helps in optimizing inventory management, ensuring that the right products are available at the right time, and reducing stockouts or overstock situations.

  • Remote Work Support: AI-powered collaboration and communication tools ensure efficient remote work by facilitating seamless communication, project management, and information sharing. Including banking facilities where you can transfer money and purchases online via banking apps which saves you time. 
  • Smart Content Filtering: Curate and filter information, reducing information overload and helping individuals focus on relevant content and tasks.
  • Learning and Skill Development: Learning platforms offer flexible and personalized training, allowing individuals to enhance their skills at their own pace, which can contribute to professional growth and satisfaction. 

  • Virtual Assistants: Virtual assistants can handle administrative tasks, manage to-do lists, set reminders, and answer questions, allowing individuals to offload routine tasks and concentrate on higher-value activities. Over the decades, AI has evolved through different approaches and paradigms, such as symbolic AI, connectionism, and machine learning. Today, we see AI integrated into countless applications, ranging from virtual assistants like Siri and Alexa to self-driving cars and advanced medical diagnostics. 
  • Entertainment and Relaxation: AI-driven entertainment recommendations, such as movies, music, and articles, can offer a convenient way to unwind and relax. All the above Artificial Intelligence tools are a great support for work-life balance, but many of them are not using it properly with or without the knowledge or not much facility to use more of these tools. Those Tools and Apps offer a range of benefits in almost every industry and every country with available sources, including the ability to plan easily and save time for work-life balance. In my experience, improving customer experiences, optimizing operations, and enhancing communications are some of the major support concerns in the Travel Retail Industry. By leveraging these technologies, managed to provide better service to our multicultural clients and colleagues efficiently and effectively. This is not new to Sri Lanka and many industries use many of these tools for work-life balance with available resources. 

Furthermore, In today's rapidly evolving business landscape, the integration of automation and artificial intelligence has become a prevailing trend. Industries across the globe are leveraging these technologies to streamline processes, improve efficiency, and ultimately, strike a balance between work and personal life. In Sri Lanka, most organizations are adapting to AI culture for an easy work life and mostly private organizations. A recent article shedding light on Sri Lanka's finance departments offers a compelling perspective on how embracing automation and AI can positively impact work-life balance. 

3.) Sri Lanka’s Finance Departments do not fear Artificial Intelligence;  the outcome would be a better Work-Life Balance

Daily FT Article (2016) Sri Lanka Banking Sector Adupting for Artificial Intelligence for Work-Life Balance. The following article delves into the key insights of the Sri Lankan banking sectors and they can draw inspiration from this progressive approach of using Artificial Intelligence for Banking Systems and support employees and Customers for a smooth and easy lifestyle with their day-to-day banking and work-life. The finance departments in Sri Lanka have become leaders in the deployment of automation and AI. Rather than fearing the disruption these technologies might bring, they have embraced them as allies in the pursuit of a healthier work-life balance. Also mentioned Finance professionals can devote more of their time and energy to making strategic decisions, coming up with innovative solutions to problems, and engaging in personal activities by automating repetitive and time-consuming duties.

 The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) latest research concludes Despite popular fears which range from job losses to doomsday scenarios, Sri Lanka’s finance professionals welcome the rise of Artificial Intelligence, Automation, and Robots. 

The results of the poll of 1,628 CIMA members reveal that 83% support the idea of more automation if it saves time and money or helps with indecision in their organizations. This indicates that accountants regard the impact of new technologies as an opportunity rather than a threat and balance work life. 

The article also mentioned when asked about the effect of such innovation on businesses, management accountants were most likely to state that the outcome would be a better work-life balance as computers will take over jobs while humans continue to reap the profit of 68%, followed by more efficient companies as a result of better automation and data analysis 65%. More than one-third even feel that there will be a general up-skilling of the workforce due to the need for more advanced computer skills.  Moreover, only 40% of surveyed CIMA members believe that the increased automation will lead to a loss of jobs and therefore to greater inequality while AI supports to easy work life. This is in stark contrast to the popular view that major job cuts will happen over the coming years as a result of automation and a rise in robotics. While 32% answered that reliance on automation or technology has led to their organization taking the wrong decision in the past five years, the article also emphasizes with 35% votes this has never happened as they know that they cannot solely rely on automated processes. Instead, results are double-checked


Andrew Harding FCMA, CGMA, CEO of CIMA, said: “While it’s possible to imagine a nightmare scenario where advances in technology lead to mass redundancies, the world’s finance departments have a less alarmist view. Our members believe that artificial intelligence, robots, and other technologies will alter, but not destroy, the jobs of accountants and other professionals. Organizations need to examine their business models and turn innovations such as AI and automation into an opportunity, not a threat. 

The article highlights “There is precedent to support the idea that new technologies will make lives easier. Ever since the invention of the printing press – which led to unemployment for scribes but opened the door to mass education – major disruptions can be seen to have a short-term shock but deliver long-term benefits. And also mentioned the challenge for businesses, as always, is to use change to their advantage" and be positive thinkers. 

Conclusion; 

Artificial intelligence (AI) integration has shown to be a game-changer for improving work-life balance. AI-driven tools and solutions are transforming how people manage their work and personal obligations by reducing chores, increasing productivity, and providing personalized help. In the dynamic environment of "Travel Retail," AI solutions have, in my opinion, been quite helpful in streamlining challenging workdays and fostering cross-cultural interactions. AI helps to create a more harmonious balance between work and personal life by streamlining processes, improving communication, and offering customized solutions. AI has the ability to reduce administrative demands on workers, which would increase job satisfaction and staff retention, according to forward-thinking firms. AI-driven solutions that simplify laborious duties, assist effective scheduling, and generate possibilities for personal development benefit people as well. Furthermore, As demonstrated in Sri Lanka's finance departments adopting automation and AI to improve decision-making and ultimately attain a better work-life balance, the importance of AI in work-life balance is also apparent in various sectors, including banking. The favorable effects of AI on work-life balance highlight the importance of proactive adaption to these game-changing technologies as industries continue to change and positively affect work-life balance.

AI clearly excels at automating repetitive and mundane jobs, freeing up brain resources for more strategic and creative endeavours. This, in turn, can lead to increased efficiency, decreased stress, and a better overall work-life balance.
